'VERIZON' THE NEW BA/GTE ID
|
New York, NY April 4, 2000 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) Bell Atlantic and GTE
chose the name "Verizon" for the
combined company once FCC merger approval is received. The companies said
the name is a
combination of the Latin word for truth, "veritas," with
horizon. They also are naming the BA-Vodafone wireless
venture, which has a planned launch date of April 4, Verizon
Wireless. The wireless venture will be the first entity to
use the new brand name. The companies
said they expect a full rebranding of the combined company
will take 12 to 24 months, although they plan to quickly
place the new logo that emphasizes the initials V and Z on
"key locations" such as payphones, vehicles and customer
bills. BA and GTE said the name Verizon, which is
pronounced to rhyme with horizon, was chosen from a list of
8,500 considered.
