NEW INTERNET STANDARDS BODY LEAD BY NORTEL
|
New York, NY April 5, 2000 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) Nortel Networks Corp. said on Tuesday it and more than 30 Internet infrastructure, content and service providers are banding together to find ways to improve delivery of content over the Web.
"The BCDF (Broadband Content Delivery Forum) will focus on recommending open architectures to deliver rich, multimedia content over the emerging broadband networks and improve end user experience through improved performance and personalization," Nortel said, adding that membership is open to anyone on the Internet delivery chain.
Nortel networking rivals Cisco Systems Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc. are not in the group which includes such big-league players as computer firms Hewlett-Packard Co. , Sun Microsystems , British Telecommunications Plc and broadcasters like the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and NBC's Internet unit.
The group, initially chaired by Anthony Alles, president and general manager of Nortel's IP Services unit, until its first meeting this May, will attempt to speed up the delivery of the Internet - still sluggish for many end users because it is built for dial-up links.
It will also work on systems to allow service providers to recognise and provide personalized content and services to their subscribers.
"The goal is to help people realise a better overall experience with rich content on broadband links while creating new opportunities for service and content providers to meet customer demands," Nortel said.
Other members will include Akamai Technologies Inc. , Aliant , Alta Vista, AT&T Broadband, Bertelsmann , Be Here Corporation, Broadband Digital Group, Broadjump, Canbras Communications Corp. , CMGI Inc. , DSL Networks, El Mundo, Enron , First Mark Comm, iKnowledge, InfoLibria, InfoSpace.com , Inktomi Corp. , NetActive, Qwest Communications International Inc. , Redo Ajato Ltda., Starguide Digital Network, Telocity Inc. , Telstra, TVA Sistema de Televisao S.A., Universo Online Ltda., and Zyan Communications.
