SWEDEN BANS USE OF .COM IN CORPORATE NAMES
|
Stockholm, Sweden April 5, 2000 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) While Lastminute.com
in Britain and Amazon.com in the US have become household brands, in Sweden
the registration of such names is no longer allowed. The Swedish patents and
registration office, PRV, has banned new companies from including in their
names not only .com but .se, the country's domain name, and any company
names that include www and the sign @.
Financial Times reports that Per Nordström, the chief legal adviser at PRV,
said: "We didn't think it was a good idea to mix business names with
electronic addresses." He said PRV was also concerned that a company could
register a name that was not its approved electronic address.
Lawyers described PRV's decision as harsh and said it might well lack a
basis in law. However, people in the internet industry said it was
understandable.
