San Francisco, CA May 4, 2000 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS)
MarketPlace Domain Inc. (marketplace.mp), at the 122nd
annual meeting of the International Trademark Association in Denver,
Colo., announced the official opening of the newly available .MP
"MarketPlace" top-level domain and its Trademark Protection Program.
Among its first clients is the consumer product company Procter &
Gamble,
which registered and reserved 25,000 MarketPlace Domain names that were
derived
from their trademarks.
MarketPlace Domain also announced the rollout of
TMtab, its powerful Website-locator tool that eliminates the need for
search engines and keyword searches. An acronym for "Take Me To The
Authentic Brand," TMtab promotes and strengthens brands and trademarks on
the Internet by eliminating the clutter returned by search engines and
providing customers with a quick and easy way to go directly to the
companies and products they know and trust.
"The Trademark Protection Program allowed us to register multiple
variations of our trademarks easily and simply," said Mark Schar, vice
president of Global iVentures at Procter & Gamble. "TMtab will help
protect the
equity of our brands on the Internet and allow consumers a quick and
efficient way to find brand Websites."
MarketPlace Domain's "Trademark Protection Program," offered for a
limited time only, provides trademark owners the opportunity to secure an
unlimited number of MarketPlace Domain names derived from their federally
registered trademarks. Trademark specialist and strategic partner
NameProtect.com will verify all trademarks against the United States Patent
and Trademark Office database. Domain names are registered in packages, with
per-name costs as low as 70 cents per year. Registrations are good until
July 2014, eliminating re-registration fees and headaches.
"It's about time someone looked out for trademark owners on the
Internet," said Steve Yankovich, president and CEO of paper2net.com, a
leading Silicon Valley company serving the enterprise, ASP and corporate
portal markets. "When it comes to registering our trademarks as domain
names, the Trademark Protection Program offers the most affordable and
robust protection from cybersquatters and pirates."
"To date, trademark owners have been left to fend for themselves on the
Internet," says Gib Bintliff, CEO of MarketPlace Domain. "There has been a
great deal of talk about trademark protection on the Internet. Not much has
happened. New laws are a start, but they offer limited and often expensive
relief. MarketPlace Domain puts control of trademarks where it belongs --
with
the owners."
TMtab eliminates the need for search engines and keyword searches. The
system uses multiple domain names derived from trademarks and IP addresses
to direct Web traffic. While search engines and keyword searches use a
single word or phrase to produce a very broad result, TMtab uses a large
number of words and phrases to produce an exact result.
By re-directing their MarketPlace Domain names to one or more specific
Websites (usually their existing .com sites), trademark owners create a
specific target for their customers.
"We are not a technology company, we're an 'access' company," Bintliff
continued. "TMtab is based on the fundamental addressing system of the Web.
In essence, we create more 'doors' to a company's online store and make it
easier for their customers to walk through them."
Tommy Ho, director of client services for New York-based NameEngine, a
company that creates, protects and uses names to build a strong online
brand for their clients, agrees that MarketPlace Domain's offerings are of a
great benefit to companies. "Unlike other keyword services, MarketPlace
Domain's TMtab relies on a legacy system: the DNS, which the Internet is
based on," Ho said. "It's certainly both more authentic and reliable than
keyword
services, not to mention less expensive and more efficient."
