NO NEW TLD'S ANYTIME SOON, SAYS ICANN CEO
|
New York, NY November 20, 2001 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) ICANN has no plans to introduce new TLDs, according to ICANN CEO Stuart Lynn in an interview by Computerworld's Patrick Thibodeau last week.
"One of the reasons we're doing a proof of concept is to try ..." to determine whether new TLDs jeopardize the stability of the DNS, says Lynn. He then admits he doesn't mean technical stability, the stability that keeps the Internet running and secure.
Lynn means intellectual property "stability", which has no bearing on the stability of the Internet at all. Nonetheless, he claims authoritatively, "There are ... different kinds of stability, including trademark and cybersquatter issues."
Lynn also claims responsibility for creating a level playing field and a fair place for competition -- then contrarily states that ICANN is not obligated to introduce new TLD's (ie, competition!), even in the absence of technical impediments. "If there is no demanding, pressing consumer need that's perceived, then why risk destabilization in other areas?"
And there's the obligatory ICANN tagline: "We're not a regulatory body; we coordinate a degree of industry self-regulation."
Incredible. Read the complete interview here.
