NEUSTAR & REALNAMES, FOUNDING MEMBERS OF IFIK
|
BEIJING, People's Republic of China -- Oct.31, 2001-- The
International Forum for Internet Keyword [www.ifik.org] was launched and
officially founded on October 20, 2001 in Beijing, China. IFIK's
objective is to provide an open forum for discussing issues related to
Keywords on a global scale. It is the first professional forum which
focuses on issues of Keywords in the world.
Keywords consist of simple names and phrases that are easier for people
to remember and use than long and cumbersome URL Web addresses. Keywords
are an effective access technology that permits users to directly
navigate to websites by typing simple terms into the browser command
line. Keywords, which work across all character sets and languages, make
it much easier for users to navigate the Internet.
At present, there exist many different technical resolutions for
realizing Keyword applications worldwide. It is quite significative for
the Keyword popularization to consider how to combine the technical
research, policy development and market promotion together, and
encourage all individuals of insight to exchange views through an open
forum.
Therefore, China Internet Network Information Center [CNNIC], Taiwan
Network Information Center [TWNIC], RealNames Corporation, Netpia and
NeuStar jointly proposed to establish IFIK, in association with Keyword
registrars and related institutions.
Now that IFIK has been founded, it will carry out extensive discussions,
which focus on the issues of technical criteria, technical-based
application services, relevant registration policies and dispute
resolution policies.
As Mr. Gao Lulin, the initial chair of the IFIK, said, " The tenet
of the IFIK is to pool the wisdom and efforts of every member, draw on
the wisdom of the masses, and facilitate the development of Keywords on
a global scale. It can diversify the implementations of Keywords,
rationalize the disputes resolution policy for registration and guide
forward the market promotion."
At the IFIK inaugural meeting in Beijing in October, an interim
Executive Committee [EC] was appointed that is composed of five members,
one from each of the five founding institutions, including CNNIC, TWNIC,
RealNames, Netpia and NeuStar. They are:
Mr. Gao Lulin, the Member of CNNIC Steering Committee, Mr. Chen Wen-Sung,
the CEO of TWNIC, Mr. Keith Teare, the president of RealNames
Corporation, Mr. Chang Hun Lee, the vice president of Netpia and Eric
Brunne, the senior technical manager of NeuStar. The interim EC reached
a consensus to nominate Mr. Gao Lulin the interim chair of the EC.
Later, the Committee members held the first EC meeting, and discussed
the future tasks of the IFIK. In accordance with the suggestion of Mr.
Gao Lulin, the initial secretariat of the IFIK would be set at CNNIC,
and would begin in November 2001.
IFIK is an open international forum focuses on Keyword issues. Any
organization or individual interested in the technology, policy or
market promotion of Keywords can apply for joining the IFIK. Currently,
there had been several institutions submitted their application forms.
