LIMITED PROGRESS ON PRIVATIZATION MAKES OUTCOME UNCERTAIN

Washington, DC June 12, 2002 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) The U.S. Senate's Commerce Committee held an oversight hearing today to take another look at ICANN.
Testimony ranged from the refreshingly candid - Peter Guerrero's U.S. GAO report - to original and thought provoking - Cameron Powell, Vice President and General Counsel of SnapNames - to don't bother me, I can't cope - Nancy Victory, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information, U.S. Department of Commerce.
VeriSign's Roger Cochetti used his five minutes to lobby for free reign to enhance its monopoly position, and ICANN pres Stuart Lynn delivered his predictable, folksy drivel..
The Center for Democracy and Technology's Alan Davidson was uncharacteristically emphatic in calling for elections, not selections. And Karl Auerbach, elected ICANN director representing North America, was characteristically unagenda'ed, direct and honest in both his assessment and recommendations.
Will all this make a difference? I wouldn't bet the farm on it. The hearing in its entirety is audio-archived here.
