FRAUD CHARGES FILED AGAINST WORLDCOM
|
New York, NY June 27, 2002 (ICB TOLL FREE NEWS) CBS Marketwatch reports that the SEC filed fraud charges yesterday against Worldcom. SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt said the agency also was seeking a court order that would freeze payments to company executives and bar destruction of company records. The government's motion also would prevent dissipation of WorldCom assets.
The Justice Department said it would explore potential criminal charges against WorldCom and its senior-level executives for misleading investors with fraudulent earning statements. The SEC also is seeking to bar certain WorldCom executives from ever serving as directors or officers of a publicly traded company and force them to disgorge any profits from stock sales.
One prominent senior Worldcom exec is ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf. There is talk not-so-privately of antitrust lawsuits being considered against ICANN. Will Justice and the SEC make the connection?
No one is suggesting that Cerf is responsible for Worldcom's financial affairs. But ICANN, like Worldcom, is guilty of incredible corporate malfeasance which Vint Cerf is responsible for. And ICANN should be stopped before it causes any more damage.
President Bush pledged that his administration would hold corporate chieftains responsible for their actions under his watch. We can only hope that he makes the ICANN connection.
